Cold & flu season is here, protect your health by washing your hands, getting plenty of rest, staying hydrated, and masking if you’re feeling under the weather. If you do start to feel sick, UChicago Student Wellness is here for you with care, guidance, and free COVID tests.
- Wash Your Hands: Wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after being in shared spaces, to effectively remove viruses and bacteria. Avoid touching your face to reduce germ transfer via eyes, nose, and mouth. You can also use hand sanitizer when hands are not visibly soiled.
- Cover Your Cough: Use your elbow or a tissue when coughing or sneezing to reduce the spread of respiratory droplets. This simple practice helps protect those around you and keeps shared spaces healthier during peak illness season.
- Mask in Public Indoor Places: Wearing a well-fitting mask adds an extra layer of protection by reducing exposure to airborne respiratory droplets, particularly helpful during peak cold and flu season.
- Get Vaccinated Yearly: It’s not too late to get your flu shot this year. Seasonal vaccines strengthen your immune system by preparing it to recognize and fight circulating strains. Staying current reduces severe illness and helps protect your campus community, especially during peak transmission months.
- Prioritize Sleep: Try to get adequate sleep (7–9 hours) to enhance immune function by aiding cell repair, regulating inflammation, and boosting virus response, significantly reducing illness risk.
- Manage Your Stress: Taking brief, intentional breaks such as deep breathing, stretching, or short walks can help manage daily stress and strengthen immunity, as chronic stress increases cortisol levels and weakens the immune system over time.
