New Student Wellness Center to Feature Integrated, Student-Centered Care

The University of Chicago is nearing completion of its new Student Wellness Center, with the medical service within the integrated, student-focused facility set to open in April, and the entire center scheduled to open in October.

The new center will improve the existing student health facility on 59th Street and Maryland Avenue, bringing together in one location Student Health Service, Student Counseling Service, and Health Promotion and Wellness, all of which are currently housed in separate locations on campus. The new center will provide more space, allowing for the hiring of additional medical and mental health providers. It will also feature a dedicated entrance on 59th Street to make it easier for students to access all of the facility’s services and resources.

“The new center is part of the University’s ongoing commitment to providing exceptional health and wellness services to students in the College, graduate, and professional schools,” said Michele Rasmussen, dean of students in the University. “Ensuring students have access to high-quality care is a top priority.  This center was developed with student input and is designed to meet a variety of students’ wellness needs.  The integrated space will allow us to provide a seamless experience and continuity of care in a welcoming, student-centered environment.”

The center builds on several recent enhancements to health and counseling services, including hiring additional counseling staff to meet the diverse needs of students and launching innovative new programs such as Mental Health First Aid training, telemedicine services, hereditary cancer screenings, and drop-in counseling sessions. As is the case now, students’ use of resources and services at the new center will be covered through their Student Services Fee.

To ensure the new wellness center meets students’ needs, the University has gathered and incorporated student feedback throughout the planning and design process, including focus groups, a survey, a town hall meeting with architects, input from the Student Health Advisory Board, and ongoing conversations with students across campus.

Students will begin using the new center’s medical suite at the start of Spring Quarter.  Starting in Autumn Quarter, the center will be fully operational for all medical, counseling, and health promotion services.
