Request The UChicago Body Project

If you are a UChicago student or staff member and think that a Body Project peer-led workshop could be beneficial for your on-campus group, please complete the online request form at least three weeks prior to the desired program date. We will respond to your request within approximately one week of your electronic submission and will do our best accommodate you, but please keep in mind that event scheduling is subject to student availability. Peer-led workshops are typically provided in two 2-hour sessions held one week apart (e.g. two consecutive Tuesdays at 6pm), but we’re happy to work with you to schedule something that best meets your needs.

Will students actually participate in a discussion of this kind?

Yes! In fact, The Department of Health Promotion and Wellness has been approached by many student who expressed how important they feel this topic is within our campus community. Additionally, UChicago students who have participated in these conversations, or completed the peer leader training, have shared how glad they were to have been given a safe space to have these conversations.

Who can participate?

The UChicago Body Project has facilitated workshops for campus RSOs, greek organizations, and other student groups on campus. If you have a group interested in discussing issues related to body image and self-esteem, please contact Lena Ismail at ljismail@uchicago.edu.

Do the workshops have to be 4 hours long?

The Body Project is designed to be facilitated in two 2-hour sessions, with a week between them.  While we recommend that each group complete the entire program in this format to achieve the maximum benefit, we know that may not fit with your group’s schedule and can also work with you to design something that better suits your needs.

How big should my group be?

We recommend a group of at least 8 – 12 to make for good conversation. As the program organizer, it is up to you to recruit participants and remind them to attend.  We can provide you with images and language for marketing and recruitment purposes.

Where should I hold my workshop?

Because of the sensitive nature of the conversations that happen during The Body Project, we recommend holding your facilitation in a quiet, private, and comfortable location like a lounge or conference room. The group should be able to sit comfortably in a circle so that everyone participating in the conversation can see each other.

Should I participate in the conversation?

That’s up to you!  If you want to be a part of the conversation, and think that your group would be comfortable with you attending, that’s great.  If you think that your presence would make group members uncomfortable or less likely to share, you may want to let them have this conversation without you.  This is especially true if you are a non-student planning for a group of students that you advise or manage.  If you choose not to participate, please make sure that you are still available to meet the peer leaders and help them set up, or designate another group member to do that in your place.

What if I’m interested the program, but don’t have a large enough group?

We want to make The Body Project available to everyone on campus.  If you have a group that’s interested in participating, but do not have the recommended 8 -12 people, or if you’d like to participate in a discussion as an individual, please email Lena Ismail at ljismail@uchicago.edu to be added to our interest list and included in a group.

How do you know if the program has worked?

Previous research has found The Body Project curriculum to be effective in a variety of different settings.  Additionally, Health Promotion and Wellness is committed to making sure that this is the best, most effective program for our campus community, and will be partnering with The Department of Psychiatry’s Eating Disorder Program to complete a thorough evaluation on our campus.  Every student who participates in the program will be invited to complete optional pre and post surveys as a part of this evaluation process.

Are the sessions confidential?

The peer leaders value your privacy, and as such, would never discuss any of your personal information with anyone outside of Student Health and Counseling Service.  However, peer leaders are encouraged to consult their program advisor if they have concerns about a group or individual participant.  This consultation could include sharing personal examples given during a workshop in order to determine how to best support the group or student.  In a case like this, no identifying information would be shared so the participants would remain anonymous. However, if in the course of The Body Project dialogue, a participant chooses to disclose information about an existing untreated eating disorder or other potentially dangerous behavior, the peer leaders could discuss those concerns with Student Counseling Services, and, with that student’s permission, share their contact information  the program advisor or Student Counseling staff.

How do I request a workshop?

Requesting a workshop is easy!  Just complete our online request form, or email ljismail@uchicago.edu with any questions.
