“Let’s Talk” is a program that provides easy access to informal and confidential consultations with counselors from the Student Counseling Service. There are three “Let’s Talk” sites. No appointment necessary and no cost to you. If you prefer, you do not have to give your name.
The counselor will listen to your concerns and provide support, perspective, and suggestions for resources.
Unlike services provided at SCS, “Let’s Talk” is not formal therapy: it is a drop-in service where students can have an informal consultation with a counselor from time to time.
Let's Talk is open to all University of Chicago undergraduate and graduate students. “Let’s Talk” is the best fit for the following people:
- students who are not sure about therapy and wonder what it’s like to talk with a therapist;
- students who are not interested in therapy but would like the perspective of a counselor;
- students who have a specific problem and would like someone with whom to talk it through;
- students who have a concern about a friend and want some thoughts about what to do.
Let’s Talk Staff Bios
Yoko Mori, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist. She works as a staff psychologist and a co-coordinator of Let’s Talk program. She received her degree in Counseling Psychology at Lehigh University with focus on multicultural counseling as well as training/supervision. She completed her doctoral internship at University of Illinois at Chicago Counseling Center (UIC CC) and worked there as a clinical psychologist at UIC CC. At the UIC CC, Yoko also served as the assistant director for InTouch Crisis Hotline and assistant director for group therapy program. Some of her professional interests include concerns related to identities and various cultural influences in therapy and training, family of origin issues, relationship issues, trauma recovery and resiliency, group therapy, couples therapy, and international psychology.
John McPherrin, PsyD, is a licensed clinical psychologist and life-long Chicagoan having completed his doctorate at the Illinois School of Professional Psychology and his undergraduate degree at DePaul University. He has worked at the University of Chicago Student Counseling Service since 2002. His clinical and professional interests include recovering from childhood trauma, the development of sexual and gender identities, negotiating relationship conflict, and issues around race and injustice. Therapeutically, John is a big proponent of the power of empathy and providing a non-judgmental and transparent space for exploring issues.
Tabish Shamsi, Psy.D. obtained his doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Adler University in Chicago. He is completing his Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Student Counseling Service. Tabish completed his doctoral internship at the University of Notre Dame and has a strong passion for working with university students to address clinical issues that impact social and academic functioning. Tabish has worked in a variety of clinical settings and addressed behavioral health concerns faced by individuals, couples, and families across the life span. Some of his professional interests include mindfulness and meditation, stress management, treatment of anxiety, OCD, and depression, cultural identity development, and issues related to athletic performance for university students.
